Licensed asbestos removal across Hemel Hempstead — the post-war New Town with one of the highest concentrations of mid-20th-century housing in the South East. HSE-compliant, fully insured, fixed-price quotes for HP1, HP2 and HP3.
Hemel Hempstead is a New Town. Designated in 1947 under the New Towns Act, the town that exists today was largely built between 1950 and the late 1970s — placing the overwhelming majority of its housing stock squarely within the window when asbestos materials were used most heavily in UK construction.
The original Mark I New Town housing — built in neighbourhoods like Adeyfield, Bennetts End, Chaulden, Warners End, Highfield and Grovehill — used construction methods typical of post-war system building: prefabricated panels, asbestos cement cladding and roofing, asbestos insulating board around services, and bitumen-bonded floor tiles. Mark II expansion through the 1960s and 70s added further neighbourhoods (Woodhall Farm, Leverstock Green expansion) with similar material profiles.
Outside the New Town development, the older village of Boxmoor, the Apsley area along the Grand Union Canal, and the pre-1947 cores of Bovingdon and Berkhamsted (slightly further out) preserve earlier housing — Victorian terraces, interwar semis — but the dominant character of HP1–HP3 is mid-20th-century New Town. If you live in Hemel and your property was built before 2000, the probability of asbestos somewhere on the premises is very high.
Hemel Hempstead has, in our experience, one of the highest per-property rates of asbestos discovery of any town in our coverage area. The full range of post-war asbestos materials appears across HP1–HP3: asbestos cement in garage roofs, soffits, downpipes and outbuildings; asbestos insulating board (AIB) behind kitchen units, in airing cupboards, around storage heaters and behind boilers; textured coatings on ceilings throughout the 1960s and 70s housing; floor tiles and bitumen adhesives in halls, kitchens and bathrooms; and asbestos cement water tanks in almost every loft.
Particularly common in Mark I New Town housing: AIB ceiling panels in airing cupboards (often grey, slightly fibrous, with visible screw fixings); asbestos cement soffits running the full length of the eaves; and asbestos-containing thermoplastic floor tiles in original kitchens that are still in place today.
Right-to-Buy purchases mean a significant proportion of the original Mark I housing is now privately owned, and many homeowners have inherited asbestos materials they may not be aware of. We strongly recommend an R&D Survey before any significant refurbishment of HP1–HP3 properties built between 1950 and the late 1970s.

Hemel was largely built between 1950 and the late 1970s as a designated New Town, exactly when asbestos was used most heavily in UK construction. Cement cladding, AIB ceiling panels, textured coatings and asbestos-containing floor tiles are present in a high proportion of HP1–HP3 properties.
For HP1–HP3 properties built between 1950 and 1990 — and particularly for ex-council Mark I New Town housing — yes. A Refurbishment & Demolition Survey before any significant works will identify what's present, where, so it can be safely removed or worked around. Most surveys come in around £400–£500 + VAT.
Most Hemel jobs are scheduled within the same week. From our base we typically reach HP1–HP3 within 50 minutes. Same-day commercial work by arrangement.
Bovingdon and the immediate Hemel periphery (Boxmoor, Apsley, Two Waters, Leverstock Green, Felden) are standard coverage with no travel uplift. Berkhamsted and Markyate are slightly further but still within our regular working area — call us with the postcode.
Standard single garage roof in HP1–HP3 is £350–£550 + VAT. Asbestos water tank from a loft is similar. AIB removal (around a boiler, for example) requires licensed work and HSE notification — typically £600–£1,200 + VAT depending on quantity. All quotes free, most given over the phone.
