Licensed asbestos removal across Welwyn Garden City — from the original Garden City housing of the 1920s through to post-war expansion estates and modern infill. HSE-compliant, fully insured, fixed-price quotes for AL7 and AL8.
Welwyn Garden City was the second of Ebenezer Howard's Garden Cities, founded in 1920 on principles of low-density housing, generous green space, and the integration of homes, workplaces and amenities. The original Garden City housing — concentrated west of the railway around Handside, Brockswood and Sherrards Wood — is mostly 1920s and early 1930s, designed by Louis de Soissons in a distinctive neo-Georgian style with substantial gardens.
After WWII, the Garden City designation was absorbed into the New Towns programme and the town expanded eastward — Panshanger, Peartree, Hatfield Hyde and Woodhall — with extensive 1950s and 1960s housing built to higher densities than the original development. This post-war expansion uses construction materials typical of its era, including significant use of asbestos cement, AIB and textured coatings.
More recent development at Stanborough, the Howardsgate fringes and around the QEII hospital site adds 1970s onwards housing, much of which is also pre-2000 and therefore potentially asbestos-bearing. The result is an AL7/AL8 housing stock that spans nearly 80 years of UK construction history — and most of it falls within the pre-1999 asbestos window.
The original 1920s-30s Garden City housing tends to have less asbestos than later stock — the materials weren't yet in standard residential use — but later refurbishments to these properties (re-roofing, new kitchens, central heating installation) have introduced asbestos in many cases. Common finds: asbestos cement on garage roofs and outbuildings added in the 1950s-70s, Artex and textured coatings applied to ceilings during refurbishments, and asbestos-containing floor tiles in kitchens updated mid-century.
The post-war Panshanger, Peartree and Hatfield Hyde housing has the full mid-20th-century asbestos profile: cement roofing on garages, AIB around services, asbestos cement water tanks in lofts, and textured coatings throughout. These are the properties where we do most of our Welwyn work.
A particular feature of the Garden City stock is the high proportion of detached and semi-detached homes with substantial separate garages and outbuildings — many of these have asbestos cement roofs that are now 50–60 years old and beginning to weather. Roof removal is one of the most common Welwyn Garden City job types we attend.

Less common than in the post-war expansion areas, but not absent. Most original 1920s-30s properties have been refurbished, re-roofed or extended at some point since 1950, and those works often introduced asbestos materials. We'd recommend a survey before any disturbance of a property you don't know the asbestos history of.
