Asbestos was used in UK construction from the 1950s until its full ban in 1999. If your building was constructed or refurbished before that date, asbestos-containing materials may be present in roofs, ceilings, floors, walls, insulation and pipework.
Removal of those materials is regulated work. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require that all but the smallest, lowest-risk jobs are notified to the HSE 14 days in advance, performed by trained operatives wearing appropriate PPE/RPE, and disposed of through licensed waste carriers at authorised hazardous-waste facilities.

Lower-risk materials such as asbestos cement and textured coatings can in principle be removed by competent non-licensed contractors, but we recommend using a licensed contractor for all removal work because of the documentation it produces and the assurance of competence.
